A Trip to the Moon - Chelsea's Post

Its hard to look at the future, without taking a look at the past first. In our cinema class we look at early films, and one that was mentioned caught my interest. Its called A Trip to the Moon, by George Méliès. It is based on a book called From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne. This movie is the first example of a science fiction film. Although Verne’s book was accurate, as far science had developed thus far, this film is more of a satirical look at science fiction. Méliès makes fun of how scientists were progressing slowly by making everything seem so fictional, such as portraying the moon as a magical creature with a face. This film is interesting because in some ways it was ahead of its time, but in other ways it was very primitive. Some parts of the 14 minute film, were accurate, such as when the rocket is taking off. Other parts like when the “astronauts” simply have to push the rocket over the edge of the moon to get back to earth. It just shows that for a science fiction film the technology and cinematic techniques were supposed to very advanced, and although it was better than most other movies at that time, Méliès still used primitive methods as well. I thought this film was interesting look at the beginning of science fiction and people trying to predict the future based on the information they had at the time.

Futuristic Luxury Hotels

I found this site while I was perusing online and the images are pretty cool. Just thought everone would like to take a look. It is supposed to be the top 10 futuristic luxury hotels, a few have a status of complete and I believe one that is almost ready with a projected cost of $105 million, but many are concepts. Ha, obviously the prices to stay at these places are ridiculous. There are some YouTube clips, some that are pods that move to exotic locations, some that are under water and even a plan to build one on the moon. None the less-- an interesting view of what is to come.

Future Fashion - Rachel's Post

I found this Youtube video highly entertaining. It is funny to me because some of the predictions of what they think "Futuristic Fashion" will look like is very true. They predict that in the year 2000 the bigger the hair the better, too bad the wrath of oversized hairsprayed hair came quite a bit sooner than they thought. They only make one prediction for the males apparel and this involves always having a phone and of course a pocket to hold "candy for cuties". Sounds like the average male today to me. It is also predicted that women will wear transparent net to attract the men. This is one prediction that should have been seen as a warning instead. Some predictions were not quite as accurate, for example the belt women will wear to adjust to different climates. You must listen carefully at 1:06 for this is my favorite part of the video "oo swish".
